At Yarra Glen Primary School, we aim to make the transition from Pre-school to foundation as smooth as possible. Our transition program for Pre-school children runs from Term 1, through to Term 4. This program allows the Preschool children to become familiar with the school environment, teachers, classmates and routines, as well as meet their Grade 6 buddy for the following year.
It is highly recommended that all Pre-school children enrolled for the following year attend our final transition sessions in Term 4. It is during these sessions that children will meet their buddy and find out their teacher for the following year. These sessions can help to alleviate any anxiety that children may have about beginning school.
In our prep buddy program, our Grade sixes are buddied with a new prep student each year. The Grade 6 buddies apply for the position of being a buddy and have training prior to the new preps arriving. The training involves how to deal with tricky situations that may arise when our young students make the transition to primary school.
The program begins with the kinder transition and continues to run throughout the Foundation year with a number of cross-age activities. Prep buddies aim to provide a very smooth transition between pre-school and school.
Positive and strong bonds form between the preps and their Grade 6 buddies. It is wonderful to see how happy they are together.
